this time. this morning a 21-year-old man is in jail following a hit and run on university plfd near adel identify. the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. police believe the driver may have been racing a second car that crashed near university boulevard and riggs road. police arrested that driver. metro riders you can now use the south entrance of the dupont circle metro station. it was closed for 8 1/2 months while they replaced the old escalators with three new escalators. >> that was a long eight months for a lot of people. it really was. i don't think it really flew by. waking up to the weather, it was

tonight president obama and mitt romney will meet face to face in perhaps the last time before election day. the candidates will square off in their third and final debate. it will take place at lynn university in boca raton, florida, and will focus on foreign policy. the president has been preparing at camp david, romney in florida. the campaigns used the sunday morning talk shows to appeal to voters. >> the american people have gotten to see mitt romney up close as he offers his vision of the future and what he would do as president. even more startling is the president's complete failure to put forth an agenda for the next four years. >> what he would hear is the president making a case for how we build not education system second to none, so we have the best trained workers in the world, how we get control of our energy future. >> tonight's debate begins at

republican george allen will be at the jcc in fairfax this morning for breakfast. democrat tim kaine will be there for lunch on wednesday. like the race for president, virginia's senate race is extremely close. kaine holds a slight lead in most polls, but that lead is tightening. prince george's county will pay $3.6 million to ten people who were either falsely arrested or injured by police during a maryland-duke basketball game. $2 million will go to john mckenna. he was seen on video being beaten by police as he celebrated the win. the rest of the cash will go to the other nine plaintiffs. one of the others was acquitted of the assault on friday. the other, james harrison, was convicted of second degree assault. harrison faces up to ten years behind bars. a man is in critical condition this morning after falling more than 20 feet from

an escalator at met life stadium in new jersey. police say the 42-year-old was leaving the giants-redskins game when he fell over the side of an escalator. the man fell 21 feet and landed on a metal stage. police are not sure what caused him to fall. the redskins could not make it two in a row yesterday. they took on the giants on the road. eli manning sealed the redskins' fate with a last-minute comeback. >> third down and two. manning looks to prove. and he will race to the end zone. >> ouch. manning sails a 77-yard pass right into the hands of victor cruz in the end zone. there just wasn't enough time to recover. the redskins lose 27-20. it proved to be more costly than just the loss. tight end fred davis does a bad roll, hurting his achilles

tendon and ending his season. after the game, tackle trent williams talked about what it means for the offense. >> it's definitely a blow. there's nothing we can do about it but continue to go forward. hopefully, we'll have someone step up and kind of fill that void. >> the team minus davis is on the road next week against the steelers. >> it looks like the redskins will have a little hope, and it comes in the form of a longtime favorite. former tight end chris cooley will return to the team. he reportedly is working out a deal with the team and could return as early as today. the team released him back in august after an eight-year run during which he became one of the team's more popular players. rumor has it, though, returning to the at that point, he's still going to be able to help us out on news 4 and do his broadcast duties on monday with dan. >> he had a really short break. he was out and in in no time.

>> and four others were hurt. at this point, it's not clear if haughton's wife was among the victims, but witnesses say they saw gunfire and saw smoke after he walked in. >> the milwaukee area has seen mass shootings before. just two months ago a former army veteran and white supremacist killed four people and wounded more. and a gunman shot 11 people, killing seven at a church service inside a hotel. an al qaeda plot to kill people in yemen. the men planned on using weapons they smuggled in from neighboring syria. jordan says al qaeda operatives in iraq had also been helping the militants make explosives.

the white house is denying reports that the u.s. and iran have agreed to talks over tehran's nuclear program. "the new york times" reported over the weekend that the two sides had agreed in principal to one on one talks. a u.n. security spokesperson said the report isn't true. however, president obama has said he'll do whatever it takes to keep iran from getting a nuclear weapon. some doctors say the nationwide meningitis outbreak could have been prevented. according to "usa today," there was a similar outbreak ten years ago in north carolina, when five people became ill, and one of them died. doctors say compounded steroid injections given for back pain needs to be particularly sterilized. so far the cdc says 23 people have died in this outbreak, including two in virginia and one in maryland.

another 285 are sick. today the international cycling union will decide if lance armstrong should be stripped of his seven tour de france titles. they made the recommendation back in aulling. armstrong recently resigned as chairman of the live strong foundation. last week his sponsors, nike, n anheuser busch, and the bike manufacturer trek cut armstrong. a public viewing will be held thursday in sioux falls of the late senator george mcgovern. his public service will take place the next day. he'll eventually be laid to rest at rock creek cemetery here in washington. he passed away yesterday at the age of 90. the time is 4:48. today jury selection begins for a former fbi agent accused of killing a maryland train in a drunk driving crash. adrian johnson's blood alcohol was three times the legal limit

when his car collided with another vehicle, killing 18-year-old lawrence gardner jr. the crash happened last february in brandywine, maryland. johnson faces nine charges, including vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol. if convicted, he could face up to 13 years in prison. after the crash, johnson lost his job with the fbi. also today, the man accused of throwing a molotov cocktail outside the boston common mall in arlington is due in court. prosecutors charged 19-year-old leon trail with arson. police say he threw the explosive device from the third floor of the mall into the food court on thursday. it caught fire, but it was quickly put out, and no one was hurt. family, friends, and community supporters are helping a family recover from a beating.

thomas maslin was brutally beaten. he remains in the hospital. his neighbors raised money for him at the fall safety festival in ward 6. his wife said the community is helping her cope with the attack, and she says all the donations they've received has been well worth it for her as she tries to recover from expensive medical costs. maslin looks forward to when her husband is released from the hospital in about four weeks. police arrested three men in connection with his attack. it was quite the weekend, so spectacular. >> you can't complain. >> no, you can't. and i think we have a lot to look forward to this week, especially with the warmup on the way. and the man here to deliver, tom kierein. >> my favorite time of year. and the fall color is coming on strong, probably in your neighborhood. >> like your tie. >> if you're not awake yet, look at my tie. we have had a gorgeous weekend. look at this scene in kemptown, maryland. kemptown park. absolutely gorgeous.

charles county, and the rural areas of west virginia. many of those areas are down to the upper 30s while right in washington on the warmer waters of the potomac and right on the warmer waters of the bay, it's near 50. morning commute, sunrise 7:25. 6:00 a.m., clear, chilly, calm, upper 30s to upper 40s in the metro area. 30s in the rural areas. by the lunch hour, a dramatic warmup. in fact, most locations will be in the 60s. mid and upper 60s by noontime. it's going to continue to climb as we get into the afternoon. we'll have a light southwesterly breeze by the afternoon. here's the storm team 4 four-day forecast. by late tonight, back down into the 60 -- right at 60 degree range around midnight. and then near 50 by dawn on tuesday. not as cold tomorrow morning. during the day on tuesday, partly cloudy. afternoon highs upper 70s.

vdot closed the ramp today. you'll be rerouted. vdot will build a reversible fly ramp in that area. a recall on midsized vehicles. nissan is recalling about 14,000 of its 2012/2013 altimas. the national highway traffic safety administration says they need to be retorqued with bolts because they could cause a crash. dealers will tighten them as needed. the price of a gallon of regular unleaded drops to $3.67. that's down more than 8 cents in the last two weeks. then 2 cents since just yesterday. in d.c., the average is down to $3.82 a gallon. maryland's average is $3.64 a gallon. virginia drops to $3.51. and west virginia comes in at

anything of it until she read that debris from the meteor could be found in her area. scientists are now searching the area for other space rocks. >> we've been talking about the orionid meteor shower. unfortunately, we found out this weekend, because of all the city lights in d.c., you couldn't get a look at it saturday night. she got a close-up look. >> it kind of looked like a fig. i wouldn't have thought of it. >> i'm sure you can look for it on ebay sometime soon. >> we hope you had a great weekend, everybody. outside it's a little chilly but clear. we're having a great morning so far, and we're really looking forward to a warmup. >> we could see temperatures climb to nearly 30 degrees in a day. can you believe that? the time is 4:58. we're talking about temperatures in the 40s. you're waking up to cool conditions. again, that's all about to change. tom kierein is here.
